The style for the selected content reverts to the “Normal” style.
Select the the “Clear Formatting” option at the top of the list of styles.
The Styles pane will pop up on the right side of your screen. In the Styles section, click on the “Styles Pane” button found to the right of the available styles.

To select all the text in your document, press Ctrl+A on Windows or Command+A on Mac. To clear formatting from content, select the text for which you want to clear formatting. That’s when you might notice that your formatting changes do not work. For a picture inserted in Word document, you can use the built-in feature to remove its background if you just want the foreground or main part of it. Note: In Word, there is an overriding style attached to every paragraph, so any formatting changes made to paragraphs without changing the associated style may not stick. We’ll show you a couple of ways to do this. This check box does not affect the individual settings in the “Always show these formatting marks on the screen” section.If you’ve applied various formatting changes to the content in your document, and they either don’t work or you want to start over, you can easily clear formatting from selected text in Microsoft Word. The “Show all formatting marks” check box toggles the display of the non-printing characters in the document. In the “Always show these formatting marks on the screen” section, select the check boxes for the non-printing characters you want to show in your document at all times. (When you point your mouse at the button, the tooltip says Show/Hide ). On the “Word Options” dialog box, click “Display” in the list of items on the left. To turn formatting marks on or off, do the following: In the message window, on the Format Text tab, in the Paragraph group, click the button that looks like a paragraph mark. On the backstage screen, click “Options” in the list of items on the left. To display specific non-printing characters, click the “File” tab. Next, highlight the text you wish to format using the left-click drag option with the. NOTE: We used Word 2013 to illustrate this feature. Open your document of choice and click on the Home tab located to the right of the File tab at the top left. In the Options screen, choose Display from the left side menu. In the left section of the menu, look toward the bottom for Options. We’ll show you to easily show and hide these characters. To show paragraph marks in Microsoft Word for Windows: Open the File menu at the very top left. On the display tab, you will see a section called Always show these formatting marks on the screen.

But there may be times when you want to hide these characters to view your document as it will be printed. How to Remove Formatting Symbols in Word: Method 2 On the file tab, at the bottom of the screen, you will see an option called Options. For example, you can tell when you have inserted two spaces between words or added an extra carriage return. Why would you want to display non-printing characters in a document? It’s easier to understand the spacing and layout in your document when these special characters are displayed. Word refers to these special characters as non-printing characters. Note that the Show highlighter marks setting is a global Word setting. In addition, Word uses several special characters for its own purposes, such as characters to indicate the end of a line or a paragraph. To hide highlight both on the screen and in print, turn OFF File > Options > Display > Show highlighter marks. Besides the normal content of your documents in Word, there are also characters that don’t normally display on the screen.
